Can an AI agent answer customers on WhatsApp?

Updated:

The short answer

Yes, through the official WhatsApp Business Platform. An agent can answer common questions, collect details, book appointments and pass the conversation to a person when needed. WhatsApp’s business rules allow AI that serves a business’s own customers; since January 2026 they do not allow general-purpose chatbots offered as a product in themselves.

What it can do

  • Answer common questions about opening hours, prices you publish, order status or the documents needed.
  • Collect the details of a new enquiry before a person calls back.
  • Book, move or confirm appointments in your calendar.
  • Send reminders and follow-ups that customers agreed to receive.
  • Hand the conversation to the right person, with a summary, when the question needs one.

WhatsApp’s rules

A business connects an agent through the official WhatsApp Business Platform, not through a personal account or the app alone. WhatsApp’s business terms allow AI used for a business’s own customer service and sales. They do not allow offering a general-purpose AI assistant as the service itself. Messages a business starts, such as reminders, use approved templates and may be charged by WhatsApp.

Keeping a person in charge

Customers should know when they are talking to an automated assistant and be able to reach a person. We set clear limits on what the agent answers, what it never promises and when it hands over, and we review real conversations with you after launch.

And phone calls?

Voice agents that answer the phone are possible too, but a phone call is less forgiving than a chat: speech recognition, accents and interruptions all matter, in Hebrew especially. We usually recommend starting in chat and adding voice once the answers are reliable.
